"...both hands on the clock pointed up toward the pitiless sun, and, though I shoved viciously against the crowd, I knew I was too late. I wasn't halfway across. I wasn't going to make it. I was stupid and slow and human, and we were all going to die because of it."
Bella, New Moon
Come on, how can you resist words and imagery like that???
I, like so many others, am firmly under the spell of Edward and Bella of the Twilight series. I've hooked others in and as my sister has blogged about, the tales are completely addictive. Not sure why. I've spent some time thinking about it...the writing in the books is actually quite good, but those characters...they seem to leap (or slink, or drift, or flee, or slouch) off the page and take up residence in your mind.
Several months ago when the trailers started appearing for the latest movie chapter of the series, my good friend, Ann, and I booked this past Saturday evening as the night to see the movie together (strength in numbers, you know). We roped Ann's wonderful hubby into sitting for all our kids, bought our tickets early and in complete delight showed up at the theatre an hour early.
Oh my goodness. The teenaged girls! They completely overwhelmed the place. And even though we were there so early, there was already a line ahead of us. Feeling a trifle embarrassed at our age to be lined up with the 15 and 16 year olds, we nevertheless were thrilled to be there and happily bought our popcorn and then settled in for a good time. (We were also very happy to find that we were not the only moms in attendance!)
The movie was pretty good -- I had some issues with the animated wolves, considering what I've learned from my sister over the years, and there were a couple of silly moments -- but those were minor issues. For 2 hours, we inhabited the world of Edward, Bella and Jacob and we had a blast.
Poor Ann, I even forced her to have her photo taken in front of the poster of our obsession (sorry, Ann) so we could document our "Twilight night out."
Ahh, young obsession. Remember those years?
"Bella, you seem to be under a misapprehension...I thought I'd explained it clearly before. Bella, I can't live in a world where you don't exist."
Edward, New Moon
Who could resist? Not me.

hee heeeee! In one hour I'm heading off to see it with Heather, I'll check back in afterward. (hi ann!!!)
I couldn't resist either. I liked it, but had problems with it. One - it was sooooo slowwwwwww.... I wanted a little more intensity or something. I missed Edward freaking out in the other room in the final scene with the Cullens. And the musical score? Bleeaaarrrgggh.
But I still loved it. ;)
Have to admit - I am obsessed with Bella and the Cullens. It is an addiction - and a fun one, at that!
I didn't love the movie, but I liked it - really, who cares?! I got to spend more time in their reality - which makes it a win for me! Hehe....
I just don't get it! Does nothing for me. I tried reading the first book and NADA. Couldn't even get past the first page. Just not into the whole vampire thing. BUT, those I know who like it, absolutely LOVE IT - like over the top LOVE IT. I know one Mom who woke herself up kissing her pillow, just thinking of Edward. Sheesh!!
And here I thought you were going to post on the blue moon that happened this month -- shows you how I'm not into the whole vampire thing -- but, one of the great things about the guilty pleasures of pop culture is that you don't have to justify them - every one has one -- some are more honest about them than others. I admit I miss Jon and Kate plus 8. There -- I've said it.
Glad you were able to go with a friend as your sister is far away in another time zone -- sorry I can't share in your delight -
had a laugh today about the whole new moon thing though with my Gr. 12s when I told them that I had heard that teen girl traffic on twitter goes way down during show times and them spikes after the show is over -- who has time to measure this stuff.
Also -- you'd get a chuckle about a creative response assignment on Ordinary People in the same Gr. 12 class -the class was split about whether to cast in their modern re-release Zac Efron or Vampire boy -- what's is name??? in the role of Conrad Jarrett -- remember the role that Timothy Hutton had in the 1980 version.
You can guess who I voted for...
verification word is mestsmor -- makes me think mesmorized --great way to describe the "moonies" :)
It's just pure escapism, at least for me. It's certainly not the vampire theme - I've never really enjoyed any of the other vampire series (like Lestat...), I just like the characters and the story and basically the teen angst. And it certainly isn't the writing either, the author has admitted herself that her writing was horrible for a first time novelist.
To each her own, right?
Makes me laugh, the posts that come out of a simple movie night post.
Re the books - Donna, you cannot make a decision based on one page. The vampires don't even show up on the first page! hee hee Make yourself read 2 chapters, and then decide. And MoseyAlong is right...it's really not a vampire story (I don't like those myself, actually), it's a love story that just happens to include a vampire. ;-)
And actually the writing is not bad...that's why the characters and story have taken hold, because this is a better tale than the average teen romance out there, I think. It's not Margaret Atwood, but for the genre, it's good.
